IPMA 4-L-C Certification Pathway

IPMA 4-L-C is a certification pathway designed to support the progressive development of professional competencies in project, programme, and portfolio management and to provide international recognition of those competencies.

The certification system focuses not only on professional knowledge, but also on practical experience, management skills, and the ability to perform effectively in projects and initiatives of varying levels of complexity.

LEVEL A — Certified Director

Strategic Leadership at the Highest Level

This level is designed for senior executives, directors, and strategic decision-makers responsible for programme and portfolio management.

It reflects advanced competencies in managing large-scale and strategically significant initiatives, programmes, and portfolios; translating organizational strategy into successful project outcomes; and effectively engaging with high-level stakeholders.

Target audience:
Programme and portfolio directors, senior project management executives, and professionals responsible for leading strategic initiatives.

LEVEL B — Senior Project Manager

Management of Complex Projects

This level is designed for experienced project managers responsible for complex and large-scale projects that require a high level of professional accountability.

It demonstrates the ability to plan, manage, and control complex projects; lead project teams effectively; identify and manage risks; and establish effective communication and collaboration with diverse stakeholders.

Target audience:
Leaders of complex projects, senior project managers, and project management professionals with significant levels of responsibility.

LEVEL C — Certified Project Manager

Independent Project Management

This level is designed for project managers who independently manage projects of moderate complexity or are prepared to assume such responsibility.

Professionals demonstrate the competence to effectively manage projects throughout their lifecycle — from planning and execution to monitoring and closure — while effectively utilizing resources, leading teams, and achieving intended project outcomes.

LEVEL D — Project Associate

A Professional Entry into Project Management

This level is designed for students, young professionals, and members of project teams who are beginning their professional careers in project management.

The level focuses on establishing foundational knowledge and competencies in project management, developing an understanding of contemporary project management principles, and building a strong foundation for further professional development.
